People prefer taxis to UBER in some cities, here in Los Angeles some users prefer a taxi than a uber because of the company’s history and reputation. Specifically, they refuse to stop surge pricing when asked to do so, and as a result, customers have had to pay more for their ride
But instead some people prefer taking taxis, they feel safe and secure because taxi drivers undergo certain checks and a compulsory training program.
Taxis are cheaper as well, but UBER also offers cheaper rides depending on peak and off-peak hours.
Sometimes uber don’t show up or cars get lost so customers hate it when UBER asks them to re-book another ride.
the #1 reason why everyone hates Uber.
People complain about surge pricing which is probably the #1 reason why everyone hates Uber.
“The surge multiplier at the heart of Uber’s pricing is a black box. No one (outside Uber) knows how it is calculated or how high it can go. Riders have expressed outrage at having to pay inflated prices when the multiplier starts rising beyond 5X. Media reports from Sweden suggest that Uber has tested multiplier values as high as 50X.”
Note: This sometimes happens with taxis too, but it’s more apparent with UBER due to surge pricing which goes into effect especially during peak hours (keep in mind that this could be beneficial for the driver if you need a ride at peak times).
Calls aren’t being answered and passengers are left stranded without getting picked up by UBER drivers sometimes. They also say they don’t answer emails and Twitter messages either for months when users complain about not receiving a ride.
Comments like the following can be found all around the internet “The way Uber does business, nobody’s happy. Drivers are pissed that they’re being grossly underpaid, I’m pissed that I’m constantly late to work because it takes forever to get a driver, and it creates a toxic feedback loop where everybody’s dissatisfied.”
Prefers services under tighter regulations around safety, driver background checks, vehicle maintenance, etc.
Users Prefers services that are more consumer friendly (no surge pricing, adequate insurance coverage) Prefers services that can support local businesses, both as drivers and customers
UBER has raised a lot of eyebrows surrounding how it is regulated. In 2017 UBER was in hot water for “ripping off drivers, paying them smaller fares than what passengers pay“. “The lawsuit alleges that Uber essentially calculates two fares for each ride — one charged to the passenger and a cheaper one used to determine the driver’s pay. Uber, according to the suit, then can pocket the difference.”
The main problem with this is that there may not be strict enough regulations on safety, background checks on both the driver and the vehicle, insurance coverage for passengers, etc. Also when you pull up a UBER smartphone app user in Los Angeles or perhaps other cities such as New York City where traffic is already chaotic (and dangerous), it’s really hard to comprehend how an stranger who may have never driven around that city before would possibly know about all of the “shortcuts” used by professionals.
